What homeowners should know about hail damage.
Hail can affect a roof even when there is no immediate leak. Impact may dislodge granules, bruise the asphalt mat, crack ridge caps, or dent vents, flashing, gutters, and other metal components. The size, density, wind speed, angle, and duration of the hail all influence the type of damage that may occur.
Not every dark spot or area of granule loss is hail damage. Normal aging, foot traffic, manufacturing variation, blistering, tree debris, and mechanical contact can create similar-looking conditions. A professional inspection evaluates patterns across representative roof areas and compares shingles with related exterior surfaces.
Fresh impact damage may expose asphalt or create a soft, bruised area beneath the surface. Over time, damaged locations can lose additional granules and become more vulnerable to ultraviolet exposure and water. Because the change may be gradual, the roof can continue performing for a period before symptoms appear.
Soft-metal components can provide useful context. Dents on vents, flashing, downspouts, gutters, or air-conditioning fins may support the timing and direction of a hail event, but no single mark proves the condition of the shingles. The roofing system must still be evaluated directly.
An inspection documents visible conditions and explains what they may mean. It does not guarantee that a carrier will approve a claim. Insurance coverage depends on the policy, the reported date of loss, the carrier's investigation, and other factors outside the inspector's control.
